2004 OVERALL
GENERAL CLASSIFICATION:
Overall
Adam Bergman's record-setting
time trial performance gave him the cushion needed going into the
final criterium stage as he won the overall
Pro Men 1,2 title.
And equally so for the
Pro Women's race, Lynn Gaggioli's performance
in the time trial allowed her to mark her closest rivals in the
criterium to take a 24 second overall
win.

Criterium Sunday, May 16
The Pro 1,2 men's field marked each
other in the final stage of the JMSR and left most of the work for
the Jelly Belly squad to handle any threats to their GC leaders,
but Health Net's Brice Jones put on a show in front of his Northwest
Arkansas fans by sprinting to the criterium win after ninety minutes of hard racing. Laura Van
Gilder from Genesis Scuba was equally impressive as she sprinted
out of the last corner to take the criterium
stage win in the Pro Women's race.
Time Trial
Saturday, May 15
A new record was set this weekend at the Joe Martin uphill time
trial at Devil's Den State Park. Adam Bergman once again proved
that the Jelly Belly team considered this race to be an "A" race by shattering the previous course record by more than 10 seconds
with a time of 8:13. Lynn Gaggioli proved that she is
one of the top stage racers in the country by producing a top-twenty
time for any category with a 9:12 journey over the 2.5 mile, 6.8%
average grade course.
Road Race Saturday, May 15
Another tough day in the saddle for the Pro Men and Women riders.
The category 1,2 men worked their way through the hills of the Boston
Mountains in Northwest Arkansas over a 92 mile course. Several teams
worked to break-up the field, but the Jelly Belly / Amarak
team set a good tempo all day to keep the field together for an
exciting bunch sprint. Over the final 500 meters the Jelly Belly
train once again worked to the keep their two GC contenders out
of trouble. At the line though, Frank Pipp
(Endeavour) found a gap and delivered an exciting win for the up
and coming team. Ben Brooks and Alex Candelario,
both of Jelly Belly, finished second and third respectively to
take the final two time bonus spots. The category 1,2,3
women's field for the second day were not going to let the sprinters
decide the outcome of the race. Andrea Hannos
(Rona), Kori Seehafer (Genesis
Scuba/FFCC) and Christina Ruiter (Team
Basis) soloed to finish 1-2-3 in the 69 mile road race
which featured over 1,200 meters of climbing.
First Day Results For Pro Men and Women Road Race
Ben
Brooks (Jelly Belly/Aramark), Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly/Aramark),
Gordon McCauley (Monex) 1,2,3
in a 50-man sprint to the finish. Jelly Belly goes to the front
with 2km to go and delivers two riders to the top of the first day
General Classification (GC) results. Tina Mayola-Pic ( Genesis Scuba/FFCC),
Lynn Gaggiolio (T-Mobile) and Katrina
Grover (Rona), the first three women, finished more than two minutes in front of one of
the best women's fields assembled this year.
RECORD FIELDS EXPECTED FOR JOE MARTIN STAGE RACE
Top Men's, Women's Teams To Compete In Three-Day
Event
FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS (May 5th, 2004)- With just over a week
remaining until the start of the Joe Martin Stage Race (May 14-16),
the race organization is expecting a record turnout, particularly
in the Pro/Elite Men's and Women's events. "As things stand,
we're looking at fields of at least 80 Pro/Elite Women and 120-plus
Pro/Elite Men," says race promoter Bruce Dunn. "That's
twice as many men and three times as many women as 2003! "That's twice as many pro men and three times as many
pro women as 2003! Also, our USCF categories are attending in record
numbers as well"
But
it isn't just the numbers that impress, as most of the top teams
in the country will be represented in the Joe Martin Stage Race.
On the Pro/Elite Men's side, such teams as Health Net Presented
By Maxxis, Jittery Joe's Pro Cycling Team, Sharper Image/Mathis
Brothers Furniture, Team Monex, Subway-Express,
and Jelly Belly Presented By ARAMARK will be fielding full squads,
all of which will be out to make their mark. Comments by Jelly Belly
Presented By ARAMARK team director Danny
Van Haute summarized the feelings of all the pro teams in attendance: "We are sending six riders to the Joe Martin Stage Race, and
it will be our 'A' squad. We are going to the Joe Martin Stage Race,
not to get a top-ten finish, but to win. It has been on the radar for our team since
the beginning of the season, and is one of our big goals for 2004." There will also be a strong elite amateur presence, with Bianchi/Grand
Performance, Mercy, Athletes By Design,
Aerospace Engineering, as well as Wisconsin's Team Endeavour, previously
the Saturn Development squad.
The Pro/Elite Women's field is equally loaded with talent, as top
teams from the U.S. and Canada are heading to Arkansas for what has become one
of the nation's top five stage races. Among the heavy hitters set
to toe the line in Fayetteville include previously-announced teams
Genesis Scuba/FFCC, which includes U.S. National Criterium
Champion Tina Mayolo-Pic and Canadian star Sue Palmer-Komar;
TDS/Schwalbe High-Speed, headed up by
German climber and former University of Arkansas runner Karen Bockel;
Team Basis, whose bicycle sponsor, Javelin, is based in the state;
and Victory Brewing, coming off a strong performance in the Tour
of the Gila, where Brooke Ourada finished second overall. New additions include a seven-woman
RONA entry and possibly a T-Mobile contingent led by defending champion
Lynn Gaggioli. Other teams entered include
Team Kenda Tire- whose Katherine Sherwin
recently won a stage of La Vuelta de Bisbee-
America's Dairyland,
Athletes By Design, OBRU/The Bicycle Store,
and Sportsbook.com Women's Cycling.
The Joe Martin Stage Race is a three-day, four-stage event (two
days, three stages for USCF events) that will be held on May 14-16,
2004. Featuring cash purses of $15,000 for the Pro 1-2 men and $7,000
for the Pro 1-3 women, it is a National Racing Calendar event, and
features two road races, an uphill time trial, and a downtown criterium
in the race’s hometown of Fayetteville, Arkansas. The race is named for
the late Joe Martin, a cycling enthusiast from Fayetteville whose dream was to have
a national-caliber race in his hometown. Martin founded the JMSR’s
predecessor, the Fayetteville Spring Classic in 1978, and served
as the event’s director until he was stricken with cancer in 1988.
Since his passing the following year, the race has been known as
the Joe Martin Stage Race. Race sponsors include Nature Valley,
Gillette, Tyson Foods, Inc., City of Fayetteville Advertising and
Promotion Commission, The Bank of Fayetteville, Radisson Hotels,
Fayetteville Athletic Club, Arkansas Democrat Gazette/Northwest
Arkansas Times, Gatorade, PowerBar, Shimano,
Collier Drug Stores, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Washington Regional
Medical Center, CJRW NW, Saturn of NW Arkansas and many others.
TOP MEN’S, WOMEN’S TEAMS TO COMPETE IN JOE MARTIN STAGE RACE
FAYETTEVILLE,
ARKANSAS (February 11, 2004)- With over three months until the opening
road stage in Fayetteville, Ark., the 27th edition of the Joe Martin
Stage Race appears almost certain to be not just the most competitive
in the event’s history, but among the best in North America. The
Pro/1/2 Men’s race will include six-man entries from both Health
Net Presented By Maxxis and Jelly Belly
Presented By ARAMARK, while the Pro/1/2/3 Women’s field is almost
certain to be the best gathering of elite-level female racers that
Arkansas- and perhaps the entire Southeast - has ever seen. All
of this is a testament to race promoter Bruce Dunn and the entire
JMSR organization, says Kelly Benjamin of the Athletes By
Design women’s team: “Bruce does such a great job of promoting and
running the race that we wouldn't miss it for the world! The courses
are challenging & fun, and the race
is always run well and very safe.” From its modest beginnings in
1978 as the Fayetteville Spring Classic, organized by the man for
whom the race is now named, the Joe Martin Stage Race has earned
a Category 2.3 rating on the National Racing Calendar, as well as
a reputation for being one of America’s premier stage races.
While
at least a half-dozen other domestic professional squads are close
to confirming their entries in the 2004 Joe Martin Stage Race, Health
Net Presented By Maxxis
and the Jelly Belly Cycling Team Presented By ARAMARK are leading
the way by six-man entries each. Though official rosters have not
been released, the Health Net Presented By Maxxis
entry could include defending men’s champion Jason McCartney, as
well as 2000 U.S. Under-23 National Road Race winner & Arkansas
native Brice Jones, while the Jelly Belly Cycling Team Presented
By ARAMARK lineup might see the return of Aussie Ben Brooks (3rd
overall in 2003) and Adam Bergman (5th overall in ’03). “We’d love
to improve on our performance of last year,” notes Jelly Belly Presented
By ARAMARK team director Danny Van Haute, “particularly since
the race is in the proverbial backyard of our bicycle sponsor, Orbea. The Joe Martin Stage Race is one of the top events
in the country, and a victory here would be a major coup for the
team.” Other teams that have confirmed for the Pro/1/2 Men’s event
include the Bianchi/Grand Performance squad of 2002 winner Gustavo
Carillo, and the Endeavour Cycling Team,
the replacement for the former Saturn Developmental program that
includes some of America’s top young talent.
But,
as good as the Men’s race is shaping up to be, the distaff side
of the Joe Martin Stage Race could well be even better. While Equipe
Cycliste RONA, Quark Women’s Cycling and
Team T-Mobile have not yet confirmed their participation, the teams
that have include some of North America’s finest. The Genesis Scuba/FFCC squad
of 2003 runner-up & former Olympian Sue Palmer-Komar
will be out in force, with an eight-woman entry that will include
Palmer-Komar, fellow Olympian Iona Wynter,
and former U.S. National Criterium Champions
Tina Mayolo-Pic & Laura Van Gilder. “We thoroughly enjoyed
the first class event that Bruce Dunn and his staff put on in 2003,” says team director Michael Skop, “and
are looking forward to returning with an even stronger team this
year.” However, at least three other women’s entries are going to
be on hand with enough firepower to definitely play spoiler. Team
Basis, which includes 2002 ‘The International’/Tour de ‘Toona
winner Heather Albert and 2000 Olympian Nicole Freedman, will have
a full squad on hand, and hope to turn in a strong performance. “Javelin Bicycles is our bicycle sponsor, and they are based in Little Rock,” notes Freedman. “They
just built us the most incredible bikes, and we would love to support
them by helping Javelin gain any PR possible.” Also on hand will
be TDS/Schwalbe High-Speed, whose leader, German climbing sensation
Karen Bockel, went to college at the University of Arkansas and is very familiar with
the Boston Mountains. A former winner of both the Mt. Evans and Mt. Washington Hillclimbs, Bockel was one of Genevieve
Jeanson’s top lieutenants on RONA over
the past two seasons, and will have the support of a veteran TDS/Schwalbe lineup. And then there’s UCI Trade Team Victory Brewing,
which is bringing a quartet spearheaded by former Canadian National
Road Champion Sandy Espeseth and Kiwi
mountain goat Johanna Buick. Team director Mike Tamayo
is excited about the competition, and offers his full support of
the race organization: "It is crucial for teams and athletes
to support back the organizers that hold quality racing for women.
It is also nice to see an organizer who challenges the athletes
with a good race layout that offers some exciting racing, with epic
stages.” The Pro/1/2/3 Women’s field will also include entries from
squads such as America’s Dairyland,
Athletes By Design, Team Kenda
Tire, OBRU/The Bicycle Store, and worlddiff.com Women’s Cycling. The
Joe Martin Stage Race is a three-day, four-stage event (two days,
three stages for USCF events) that will be held on May 14-16,
2004. Featuring cash purses of $15,000 for the Pro/1/2 Men and $7,000
for the Pro/1/2/3 Women, it is a National Racing Calendar event
(Category 2.3), and features two road races, an uphill time trial,
and a downtown criterium in the race’s hometown of Fayetteville, Arkansas. The race is named for
the late Joe Martin, a cycling enthusiast from Fayetteville whose dream was to have
a national-calibre race in his hometown.

the Fayetteville Spring Classic in 1978, and served as the event’s

Race. Race sponsors include Nature Valley, Gillette, Tyson Foods,

and Lewis and Clark Outfitters.
